Forum: feature_films Subject: 30's Holywood Foreign Versions copyrights?

Hello, In the 30's, when talking films appeared american studios used to re-shoot simultaneously their movies with spanish-french or german speaking actors for the outside market.
It's hard to search for their copyright, because many have the same titles as the english version, but, as they have been long forgotten, I guess many of them may be in PD.
To begin with,
Does anybody know the copyrights of this ones?

Dracula (1931)
Spanish Version directed by George Melford , starring Carlos Villarias (DVD version shows a 1992 copyright note, but the movie was considered lost until a version was find in Cuba)

— Laurel And HArdy did reshoot themselves the foreign (spanish, french, german and Italian versions) by learning them fonetically. These lost versions where discovered and restored in the UCLA on the 80's.

With the spanish language version of Dracula, the film was never registered for copyright in the US and not renewed. However the version that appears on Universal videos and DVDs is a copyright derivative work (copyright for "cinematographic material: some footage; re-editing; music"). Without another print to compare too, it is difficult to determine where changes were made. An original unedited print would be PD.
The complete 1992 registration record is:

Dracula / dirigida por George Melford.
Type of Work: Motion Picture
Registration Number / Date: PA0000662505 / 1993-02-17
Title: Dracula / dirigida por George Melford.
Edition: Spanish version.
Description: Videocassette ; 1/2 in.
Language: In Spanish, with English subtitles.
Copyright Claimant: Universal City Studios, Inc.
Date of Creation: 1992
Date of Publication: 1992-09-10
Authorship on Application: Universal Pictures Corporation, employer for hire.
Previous Registration: Motion picture preexisting.
Basis of Claim: New Matter: cinematographic material: some footage; re-editing; music.
Copyright Note: C.O. correspondence.

Names: Melford, George
Universal City Studios, Inc.
Universal Pictures Corporation

I can't find period registrations for the Laurel and Hardey ones. However, they appear not to have been widely published in the US. As a consequence they could be considered unpublished for US copyright purposes or protected by GATT/URAA.

thanks video-cellar.
The spanish Laurel and hardy films are also availabel trhough A-1 Video.

TCM webpage, lists an USA premiere in Los angeles on 16 January 1931 for "Noche de Duendes"
http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=511014

And Desert films, in it's spanish dubed section lists their movie "Politicares" Wich , I guess, stands for bad spelling for "politiquerias".
http://www.desertislandfilms.com/spanishPD.html

There's also another title they did for France called:
Les Carottiers (1931) French version for "laughing Gravy" wich also has a colorized version

I don't know if all this data changes anything.
